In order to achieve perfect posture you must have a respect for how important it is in the first place. When you are lifting weights, you should always be sure to try and lift from a position of biomechanical strength. When you have bad posture, you are asking your body to try and produce force out of a compromised position. You not only end up being far weaker from this position but you are begging for an injury as well. You can start to fix bad posture by starting from the top down. Here, we want to first focus on the neck. Now many people will tell you that you have to focus on the chin and on tucking it back or standing against a wall and retracting it into the wall. This is not only awkward but hard to tell when you are even doing it right. Instead, you can get your neck into a vertical position in the middle cervical segments by simply standing sideways in a mirror and correcting the forward angle of the neck. Next you want to work on those shoulders. Again, here you are told to pinch your shoulder blades together. This becomes a problem because when you don’t do this correctly you wind up looking like a chicken. Instead, you can accomplish both the back and down movements of the shoulders by focusing on the sternum or breast bone instead. Make sure that the top of it is not angled downwards at all, but rather completely level (as if a glass of water). Next you want to be sure that you engage your abs. I’m not talking about flexing them but rather contracting them so that you can support your spine from below. This simply requires you to tighten your midsection and hold it without holding your breath. Next we control the position of the hips and pelvis. Due to all of the sitting we do throughout the day, we have a high tendency to have tightened hip flexors that pull our pelvis into anterior tilt. You can quickly counteract this with a squeeze of the glutes. This activation of the posterior chain muscles will pull your pelvis into a posterior tilt. If you are already anteriorly rotated this will most likely get you back to neutral, which is good. Finally, the knees always have a tendency to give in and flex a bit. This causes you to sag and hang on your pelvic ligaments. Instead, actively contract your quads and this will straighten you up and lock in your posture. Perform the exercise shown at the end a couple times per day to train these dormant postural muscles how to engage when you are not thinking about it. Transcript: Hi, I'm Mark Perry from BuiltLean if you are watching for the first time today I'm going to share with you a simple posture tip that can help you improve your posture in seconds. Here's the tip: what I want you to do is pretend that there's a string attached to the top back portion of your head and it's lifting you straight towards the ceiling. and it feels like it's lifting your body off the ground so just for one second, try applying this tip and see how you feel. There are several postural improvements that may be happening at the same time. First is, if you have forward head posture it can help lift your head backwards that's closer to your mid line of your shoulder. Forward head posture is a very common posture deviation I've seen almost every postural screen I've ever done. The second thing is, if you have rounded shoulders and your hands are in front of your things, it helps bring your shoulders back which is where they belong so that your arms are at their side and your palms are facing the side of your thighs. If you have a forward tilted pelvis which is very common for busy professionals It can help neutralize your pelvis because your body is lifting up and it helps neutralize the pelvis. So it's not excessively forwardly rotated and what's really interesting is that if you do have a forward tilted pelvis that tilts your knees inward. So when you correct that it actually helps get your knees straighter And finally, flattening feet is an extremely common posture deviation for budding professionals. and really,for most people who don't run around bare foot by using this tip and thinking and thinking about the string pulling you off the ground it actually can help improve that arch and increase the arch so your feet are less flat. And what's really interesting is when you do improve your posture and you stand up tall and strong, it can increase your testosterone and decrease cortisol which is the stress hormone and this was published in a paper by a woman named Amy Cuddy who was a social psychologist from Harvard Business School. And she even ended up creating a TE talk which has been seen by 23 million people about the same idea of how your posture and your body language can directly impact your career success and even the outcomes in your life. Applying this posture tips may not solve every single postural deviation you may have but it can go a long way to improving your posture in the long run. Some of the sleeping postures may be bad. If so, new sleeping patterns should be considered. Among the following, what is your preferred position? 1. The Fetal Position This is one of the most common sleeping posture, and around 40% of people claim that they find it most comfortable. The bad news is that this position is unfortunately the unhealthiest. It causes backaches and does harm to joints. Experts warn that it can affect also your neck and shoulders. During the night they should be aligned. If you cannot avoid sleeping in the fetus position, doctors recommend you should put a pillow between the knees. In such way you’ll alleviate stress on your joints. 2. On Your Back Those who prefer to sleep on their back have a tendency to snore at night, BUT on the other side this posture is the most beneficial of all. It is particularly good if you have back problems, and it will also resolve neck issues. We sometimes speculate why we feel pain in the back on neck without even realizing that the main reason could be our sleeping position. Sleep on your back if you want to look younger for longer. This position causes fewer fine lines and wrinkles, because there is no pressing on your face. Moreover, this posture allows you to keep the breasts supported, which prevents sagging. 3. Left Side The left side position not only does it reduce acid reflux, but it can also prevent neck and back pains. There’s a disadvantage, though – it is not the best posture for the breasts. The breasts are not supported, which leads to sagging. Since the left side posture stimulates blood circulation to the uterus, it is great for pregnant women. 4. Right Side The right side posture may cause heartburn. On the other hand, this position is similar to the last one – they both are good for people suffering from back or neck issues. Unfortunately, also this position causes sagging breasts and wrinkles. 5. On Your Stomach Many doctors agree on the fact that there is nothing as bad as sleeping on your stomach. This position causes different health problems and should be absolutely avoided. If this is your preferred posture, do not be surprised if you find out that something is wrong with your back. Sleeping in this way, during the night you put too much pressure on your joints and muscles. Consequently, you may feel numbness and pain. Sleeping on your stomach, you keep your neck in a rotated position for too long. If this is done regularly, then you will have bad blood circulation and problems in breathing. The only good thing about sleeping on your belly is that you are unlikely to snore at night and disturb whoever is sleeping by your side. In conclusion, we know that, regardless of health benefits, people sleep in the position they find comfiest. If you can, try to correct your posture, now that you know the pro and the cons of each position. If you realize you need to change something in your posture, it will probably be challenging in the beginning, to sleep in a position that is not the one you are used to. - MY PERSONAL STORY) How to Improve Your Posture? Having good posture is important. Not only can it help you look better, but it may also help you feel better. This video will give you some tips on how to improve your posture. Creative Ways to Improve Posture Think string. Always imagine that a string coming from the top of your head is pulling you gently up towards the ceiling. Visualization techniques like this one can guide your sense of proper position and height effectively. Have someone tape a giant X on your back from one shoulder to the opposite hip. Then put a straight line of tape across your shoulders closing the top of the X. Wear this during the day, to help retrain your back. This works really well if you hold shoulders back before taping, use wide non stretch tape and ideally change tape each day. Avoid the slouch when walking. Be sure to try to walk as if you had a book balancing on your head. Use color. If you need help remembering to keep your posture, think of a unique object or color. Every time you think of that object, check your posture. Focus on your calves. Let your posture and balance rely more on your calves. Try to feel an at ease attitude, and put a bounce in your step. You'll find that it will free up the rest of your upper body to relax and assume a more upright posture that takes pressure from your back, shoulders and neck, and works on your ab muscles. This is awesome, since strong calves and abs rock! Standing Posture Find your center. Proper standing posture is about alignment and balance. It also lends an air of confidence. Teach your body what it feels like. Stand with your back against a door or wall, with the back of your head, your shoulders, and your butt just touching it. If it feels awkward and uncomfortable, don't worry—as you develop good posture habits and train your body, it will feel uncomfortable to not stand this way. Sitting Posture Sit up straight! How often did your mother tell you that? For many people, this suggestion got filed right next to "eat your peas," or "your eyes will stick that way." Mom was right, though–—at least about your posture. Now, especially, when so many of us sit at a desk all day, it's important to follow these basic guidelines, both for your posture and for your health. Take standing breaks. Even if you're using perfect posture while sitting in the best chair in the world (and it's debatable whether there is such a thing), you need to stand up and stretch, walk around, do a little exercise, or just stand there for a few minutes. Your body was not designed to sit all day, and recent studies from the University of Sydney have found that "[p]rolonged sitting is a risk factor for all-cause mortality, independent of physical activity." Keep moving! Walking Posture Start with good standing posture. Walking with good posture is simply an extension of standing with good posture. Keep your head up, shoulders back, chest out, and eyes looking straight ahead. Sleeping Sleep soundly. While you will not be able to consciously maintain a particular posture while sleeping, how you sleep can have an effect on your waking posture. Using a firmer mattress will help by maintaining proper back support. Sleeping on your back will help keep your shoulders straight, and it is usually more comfortable for the back than sleeping on the stomach. If you prefer sleeping on your side, try slipping a small, flat pillow between your knees to help keep your spine aligned and straight. Summary: Bad posture is very common in today's age because of spending a lot of time sitting at the computer. Face pulls are a great exercise to counter the effects. The exercise is best done in the higher repetition range between 12 and 15 reps. And the main focus with this isolation movement should be technique and form. Now, a lot of people make the of adding too much weight to Face Pulls which prevents them from performing the movement with good technique. Another thing to focus on is the mind-muscle connection specifically with retracting the scapula and working your rear delts. Additionally this movement also helps balance pressing and pulling as a lot of routines out there overdevelop the front delts which leads to rounded shoulders and also shoulder injuries in the long run. How to fix your posture is not as complicated as it seems, in theory, but it does take a lot of work and practice. In this weeks video I address how to fix two very common postural imbalances: how to fix shoulder protraction and anterior pelvic tilt (kyphotic Lordosis Kyphotic lordotic). Bad posture is big problem for many Americans, and all people in general because we spend much of our lives in a flexed position. To further illustrate what I mean, imagine being curled up in the fetal position. This would be the ultimate flexed position, which is the opposite of good posture. We spend a lot of time texting, on the computer, driving, etc. This all impacts our kinetic chain and we end up with bad posture. It's important to start working on your posture because it will only get worse the older you get. Old people don't develop the hump on their back and start looking like quasi moto over night. They first develop the bad postures of shoulder protraction and forward head syndrome. To fix your bad posture one of the number one methods is to just stand up straight. That's right what your mom has been telling you is the best way overall. If you practice sitting and standing straight all day everyday for 30 days; I promise you will be shocked by the results. Your posture will dramatically improve. To find your normal posture take your shoulders and bring them all the way up and back and then let them hang down. This is your normal posture and a great way to work on shoulder protraction. Improve Your Posture Shoulder protraction is caused by a tight chest, tight lats, and a weak upper back (rhomboids). The way you would fix this problem would be working to strengthen the rhomboids twice as much as the chest and lats. Exercises such as barbell rows and reverse cable flies will greatly help you fix your weak rhomboids. Also spending a lot of time actively and statically stretching the chest and the lats to relieve some of the tightness. A great chest stretch is done by holding your arms bent at 90 degrees and leaning against a doorway with your chest sticking forward. To stretch the Lats hang off of a pullup bar relaxed for at least 20 seconds 4x. An anterior pelvic tilt is caused by tight hip flexors that pull the pelvis down from the front. Tight lower back muscles pull the pelvis down from the back symbiotically creating a steering wheel turning effect on your pelvis. The glutes are weekend by the position that your hips are in, and are unable to pull the hips into the proper alignment. If you want to lift the most weight you can in your shoulder workouts then you will need to fix your posture first. In this video I show you a quick posture test you can do to assess how bad your posture really is without having to wait for the results. Simply stand up and let your arms hang at your sides. Notice where your thumbs are pointing. Are they pointing inward, towards each other or are they pointing straight ahead? If you answered the latter, then your shoulders are likely internally rotated and this bad posture is having an effect on you working out. To feel what correct posture for working out should feel like, slip a resistance band over your shoulders as I show you. This should immediately fix or correct the rounded shoulders or hunchback and make you feel much more upright. You can even do a few lifts or a complete workout wearing this band contraption so you can feel what your shoulders should feel like in proper alignment. In order to correct your posture and learn how to make permanent changes here you need to start using that same band to do band pull aparts. The band pull apart exercise is great for improving your posture because it trains the inter scapular muscles like the rhomboids and upper traps to retract the scapulae. The most helpful place to start is which sitting on the stool. What you want to do is get comfortable, obviously, sitting in the direct center of the stool, and make sure that your legs are virtually a 90 degree angle, when you sit down. If you're more, almost standing up, it's probably going to be too high, and then if you're sitting too straight right from the beginning, you're going to be sitting too low. You got to remember that your legs are going to be moving, so the way that you sit is obviously very important. Posture deals more with what's going on with the upper portion of your body, and if you feel like you sit up and pull everything back, what you're doing is putting strain and stress on your shoulders and the upper part of your back. So probably the most helpful thing to do is to think about a little bit of pressure right about your pants line, as if somebody is putting a little bit of pressure with their fingers on the lowest part of your back. What that does is that it causes you to stick out your stomach a little bit more, but at the same time relax your shoulders, because the upper portion of your body, you need to be very flexible when you play with communication, with motion and movement, so you want to be relaxed, but at the same time sitting up straight. So that's typically what you want to think about with proper posture.

First of all, many people will not lean far enough forward when doing the chest exercise to maximize the impact on the chest. The further forward you lean, the more likely you are going to hit your chest rather than shifting the load to your shoulders and arms. That said, this isn’t even the most common mistake when performing dips. In this video, I show you how to avoid two errors that are made at the shoulders during this chest exercise that diminishes the results you see from it. If you want to build a bigger chest you have to try and keep as much tension on the pecs during the exercises that you perform for them. The shoulders have a way of taking away some of the load in an effort to try and assist the chest. This is not what you want if you are trying to build as big a chest as possible. You will see in a poorly performed dip that the shoulders have assumed a shrug position. It is hard to avoid this if you aren’t consciously aware that you are doing it in the first place. Just by grabbing the handles of the dip bars and then stepping away from the bars and sinking into position, you are likely to allow your shoulders and traps to drift upward. Not only does this take some tension away from the pecs but it also tends to shoot your shoulders into a forward posture which can jeopardize the integrity of the anterior capsule. To do this right you have to remember to set your shoulders and keep your shoulder blades depressed throughout the movement. You can do this by focusing on keeping the traps from rising up at any point during the dip. Even when you lower your body down you want to be sure that you prevent your shoulders from shrugging up. By doing this, you can keep the chest in a position to maximally help you during the movement. Just as during a bench press movement you would want your pecs to be able to assist the pressing of your arms away from your body, the same applies here. Try to do what I’m showing you in the video and you will instantly feel the difference between the two positions. Today I am going to show you the one mistake that most guys make when doing ab exercises. So please take the next few minutes to learn about this one thing you must avoid doing which can actually make your stomach bulge out further. Before we dive into the training and exercise, I wanted to talk about two key points in training and sculpting your abs: #1 - NO single ab workout out there will get you abs. You need to first reduce the layer of fat over the abs to get them visible. #2 - There are no “BAD” ab exercises, only performing exercises incorrectly that can make or break the effectiveness of the movement The trick here is to instead of thinking about how many reps you are doing, or what kind of equipment you’re training your abs with, focus on your BREATHING during every repetition and movement - this will ensure your abs and muscles are contracting. To show you how this tip works, I’ll apply it to 3 standard ab exercises: 1:35 - The Ab Plank - Just by changing your breathing and posture, you can make this exercise even that much better to strengthen your core and abs. Start off flat on your stomach. Make fists with each hand and place both hands at a shoulder’s width, right above the shoulders with forearms parallel to one another. Transition to your toes, keeping a straight (plank) posture from the top of your head down to your heels. You’ll notice here if you let your gut hang forward, not engaging your abs or breathing correctly, you'll see that we're not really even using the right muscles so you're not maximizing the movement. By taking a short exhale before you contract your abs, keep a tight core. By doing this you’ll double the time under tension your midsection muscles will endure, helping to speed up the time it takes to get your six pack abs more defined and toned! 3:17 - Lying Bicycle Crunches - With this movement, really focus on slowing down the movement and contracting your abs with each breath. Begin by laying flat on your back, making sure your lower back is touching the ground. Raise your hands up and place your thumbs and index fingers on your temples right on your forehead, elbows at shoulder height and at about a 30 degree angle facing out. Bend your legs at the knee and raise your legs ups at the hips, knees reaching just below the waistline. To begin, slowly bring your right elbow and left knee towards one another, flexing your core and taking a controlled breath out when the elbow and knee meet. Alternate this motion with the left arm and right knee, always remembering to control the movement and taking a breath out when your elbow is approaching your knee. 4:16 - Lying Leg Raises - Keeping tight and controlling your breathing during this movement will engage your core that much more and make the exercise even more efficient! Start by laying flat on your back, making sure the lower back is contacting the ground. Place your arms to your side, palms facing down and touching the floor. Bend your legs slightly at the knee, keeping both legs close if not completely together. Begin the exercise by raising your legs at the hips until your body creates a 90 degree angle, shooting for your heels to face the sky. Throughout the whole movement, focus on a steady rhythm with your breathing and keeping your posture flexed and tight from start to finish - you’ll feel a world of difference after! Did you notice how much tighter and defined my abs looked? Now imagine applying these new rules to EVERY rep and EVERY set, each time you train your abs…It’s a game changer! Now that you’ve gotten a chance to both see the difference in your training, apply these techniques to all your exercises to help better engage and contract your muscles, because you can start using these techniques and feeling it RIGHT NOW! Don’t forget to use the 3 second rule while performing each repetition to know just how long to hold and control a movement. You control the exercise and movement with your breathing, so always make sure to really focus on contracting your muscles at the top of an exercise while taking a breath out and taking a breath in when going to start of the movement.
